Beginning Wood Carving
Get started in the wonderful craft of wood carving. This class, is developed for those with no experience in wood carving. Students will learn how to caricature carve, a form of figure carving in which one or more features of the figure are exaggerated to achieve a specific effect. Students will carve two or more “little person” caricatures (less than 3” tall), as time allows. This exercise is one of the best ways to learn how to carve. Students will also learn about wood carving safety, how to properly maintain and use wood carving tools, and about wood grain and how it affects carving. This course will inspire your creativity and give you the skills to continue wood carving.

Harold Lee
Harold has been crafting with wood for more than 20 years. He's from a family of wood carvers. His father made display pieces from twisted red cedar and made clocks and other items from box elder burl, red cedar, and black walnut. His mother was a woodcarver later in life and carved hiking sticks and caricatures. His wife, Laura, also a woodcarver, carves Christmas ornaments, caricatures, and stylized animal figures. Harold enjoys chip carving (a decorative form of wood carving), carving “little people” (caricatures less than 3 inches tall), and wood turning pens and other small objects. He is a member of the Great Salt Lake Woodcarvers Club and the Utah Valley Woodcarvers Club. He is a co-founder, first president, and current secretary of the Wasatch Pen Turners Club.
