Beginning Silversmithing (Tuesday Morning)
Learn the beautiful art of silversmithing and create fine jewelry you can wear with pride or give as gifts. This six-week class teaches how to do most everything needed in silversmithing. Students can take stones made in lapidary or ones that have been purchased and create settings to fit them. Instruction will be given on proper tool usage, flex shaft, acetylene torch to solder silver, and bezel set stones. More complex techniques to design original rings, pendants, bracelets, buckles, and bolos will also be given. Beginner to advanced students welcomed.

Campus location: Cottage
Materials: $20 materials fee due the first day of class to the instructor (covers tools, acetylene, and equipment). Students must bring own silver, gold, or copper metals (not needed the first day of class). Colleen can help students figure out the amount of metal needed for their jewelry piece(s). Metals can be purchased from retailers like Freshmans Inc. (350 E. 5th S. Salt Lake City) or Rio Grande (online). If you have questions regarding what to bring or would like to use different metals, please contact Colleen. This class can not work with titanium or stainless steel.
Student limit: 8 people
Policy: 72-hour notice required for class cancellation and refund.

Mary is an artist and art educator residing and working in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition to teaching with the Pioneer Craft House she is a Lifelong Learning instructor at the University of Utah as well as with the Salt Lake School District Community Education. Mary loves teaching jewelry and encouraging students to stretch their imaginations and abilities. She enjoys attending regular training sessions to sharpen her teaching skills and learn for other instructors. You have have see her work on display at the Utah 2018 Statewide annual Exhibition, Rio Gallery, in Salt Lake City or at the 2018 Sense of Place, Alice Gallery, Salt Lake City.
